9A-Testing the Hypothesis Part 2

1) The opportunity that I would like to pursue is the fact that young college students and adults aren't saving money properly for their future.

2)  Young college students, and adults in general, aren't focused on saving their money right now, and in turn are entering later stages of their life with less money in the bank. Therefore, there are less people properly prepared to invest or increase economic opportunities in society.

  • The who: Young adults and college students
  • The what: Not properly saving for the future.
  • The why: Young adults are prioritizing fun now rather than later, as well as not being properly educated in saving.
3)

  • Testing the who: I asked a couple of my close friends if their currently saving money consistently. Other than a few birthday checks, all of my friends are not consistently saving money and also find issue in it. Furthermore, I can assume most students at UF and other schools also see that they're not saving for the future. It's definitely an issue that must be investigated.
  • Testing the what: When asking others about issues they think they'll run into in the future, one of the most common answers that surfaced was money. Many people are worried about money in the future, but it's such a common issue that we end up putting to the wayside. It's interesting to see so many people having a common problem with saving.
  • Testing the why: I asked my friends why they weren't saving right now. Most answers that came up were the fact that they didn't know how. Most schools don't actively teach how to save for your future, so there's no doubt that people can't do it. Another answer that comes up is spending it now than later. In a young college environment, it's really easy to get sucked into this.
4) To summarise this issue, young adults not saving now is not only a problem that will affect this generation. If we keep spending, and not planning for the future, future generations will suffer. I believe there is an opportunity here to not only profit but help generations of adults to come.

5) One thing I did not expect to learn in my studies is that one of the biggest costs that young college students meet is food. In an environment where it's uncommon to have a lot of free time, many students pay a substantial amount eating out. and prioritize this over saving.
